Bollywood's best and worst in 2011

First off, let me start by saying HAPPY NEW YEAR to all! This was supposed to be posted within the last two days of 2011, but I just plumb forgot, so we're kicking off 2012 on this blog…by looking back at what I thought of 2011's films!

Favorite overall: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Favorite action: Don 2
Favorite romance/rom-com: Mere Brother Ki Dulhan
Favorite comedy: Ready
Surprise film of the year: how much I liked Murder 2
Biggest letdown: Delhi Belly (no, not Ra.One)
Worst theater experience: the two-day Ra.One delay, followed by the subtitleless Bodyguard fiasco
Best theater experience: laughing it up with a FULL theater of desis for Ready
Favorite male performance: Prashant Narayanan as psycho killer Dhiraj Pandey in Murder 2
Favorite female performance: Believe it or not, Katrina Kaif holding her own with the boys as Laila in ZNMD (and then doing it again in MBKD)
Best music: Rockstar, hands down
Favorite song: Chammak Challo from Ra.One, followed closely by Senorita from ZNMD and Nadaan Parindey from Rockstar
Favorite item song: Desi Boyz, because most of the film was an Akki-John item song. ;)
Favorite cameo/special appearance: Aamir Khan's number at the end of Delhi Belly (the ONLY reason I'm glad I sat through Delhi Belly)

Honorable mentions: Desi Boyz, Singham, Bodyguard (which might have placed in more of these if I'd had subtitles!), Thank You (even if very few others liked it)

Films I missed, regretfully: Tanu Weds Manu, Mausam, The Dirty Picture, Rockstar, Double Dhamaal, Dookudu (Telugu), Chillar Party, Force, Speedy Singhs/Breakaway (while No One Killed Jessica and Dhobi Ghat are in my queue still...)

Here's looking forward to a great year of Bollywood ahead in 2012, and may you all have a blessed year!

  1. Nice list, I still have to catch up with a lot of the 2011 Bollywood films.
    Love the soundtrack of Rockstar!

PS: You have to watch Dhobi Ghat, it surprisingly made its way to rank 5 in my top 100 favorite films list.

  2. It's on my to-see list! I promise I'll get to it at some point. There are lots of films on my list.

  3. Hey, thanks for this. There are no titles at all on my lovefilm.com list (Bollywood section). Really nothing. Mainly because all the Mani Ratnam films I want to watch are unavailable to rent or even buy here.
